Why is this even being prescribed?

In my research I found the following warning.... I am certain there are other options why prescribe something so dangerous. Since Jimmy's death and my researching of this particular drug I have met many people who have been prescribed Oxycontin - so far not one of them has been helped by it -

WARNING:
OxyContin is an opioid agonist and a Schedule II controlled substance with an abuse liability similar to morphine.
Oxycodone can be abused in a manner similar to other opioid agonists, legal or illicit. This should be considered when prescribing or dispensing OxyContin in situations where the physician or pharmacist is concerned about an increased risk of misuse, abuse, or diversion.
OxyContin Tablets are a controlled-release oral formulation of oxycodone hydrochloride indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain when a continuous, around-the-clock analgesic is needed for an extended period of time.
OxyContin Tablets are NOT intended for use as a prn analgesic.
OxyContin 80 mg and 160 mg Tablets ARE FOR USE IN OPIOID-TOLERANT PATIENTS ONLY. These tablet strengths may cause fatal respiratory depression when administered to patients not previously exposed to opioids.
OxyContin TABLETS ARE TO BE SWALLOWED WHOLE AND ARE NOT TO BE BROKEN, CHEWED, OR CRUSHED. TAKING BROKEN, CHEWED, OR CRUSHED OxyContin TABLETS LEADS TO RAPID RELEASE AND ABSORPTION OF A POTENTIALLY FATAL DOSE OF OXYCODONE.

  1. I don't know too much about oxycontin and if it still is being prescribed, but why don't you start some sort of petition against it. You could then present it to a state legislature and get "Jimmy's Law" which could either ban the drug altogether or keep it from being prescribed without close monitoring by a doctor or mandatory membership in a support group or some kind of "extra" care when it is prescribed.

  4. I'll start researching state requirements for presenting bills and keep everyone posted here. We can remember Jimmy and save lives!

  6. Great & thanks for the help... our goal has been to put an end to this, educate, help and hopefully save lives. You would think with all of the deaths there has been some type of action taken, I am researching too - there is power in numbers and the more that are involved the bigger the impact.
